How to Make Roasted Garlic

Jump to Recipe

I’m back with this quick post about my favorite Allium: Garlic!

Garlic is a common food you find in dishes across the globe and, therefore, a staple in my kitchen. How about yours? I keep fresh garlic, garlic powder, and jarred minced garlic on hand for cooking.

Roasting is one of my favorite ways to prepare garlic. Roasted garlic has a sweetness that genuinely gives a dish a remarkable depth! Try adding it to your mashed potatoes, pasta, dips, or even whip it into a compound butter.

I also love the smell of roasted garlic and the look of its caramelization. Even better, it’s effortless to make!

Mise En Place

  • Garlic Bulb
  • Olive Oil
  • Salt & Pepper
  • One sheet of foil (about 2x the size of the garlic bulb)

How to Roast Garlic

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 F.
  2. Cut off the top quarter of the garlic bulb. You’ll want to cut off just enough to expose all of the garlic cloves.
  3. Place the garlic bulb (cut side up) on a sheet of foil.
  4. Drizzle the exposed cloves with about one tablespoon of olive oil and season lightly with salt and pepper.
  5. Fold the foil upward over the garlic bulb and seal tightly.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool before using or storing.

Roasting Tips

Tip 1: This recipe is just for one roasted garlic bulb, but making a batch ahead is handy. I like to roast multiple bulbs at once when prepping for holiday meals or events. If I have a ton of older garlic heads that will soon sprout, I roast them and find ways to incorporate them into meals that week.

Tip 2: Roasted garlic keeps well in the fridge for about one week if in an airtight container.

All in All

You may have seen on my Instagram that I am a gardener. Because I love and use garlic often, I will try to grow it for the first time- which means I can shamelessly make even more roasted garlic! I’ve heard it is pretty easy to do if planted in the right time frame, so I aim to plant a patch of garlic this November.

Any other gardeners out there who have grown garlic? If so, I’d love to hear any tips you have.
