Lovely Day
I’m writing this first post for Her Mise En Place just a few days following Valentine’s Day. This holiday, I spent the day at my full-time gig and the evening with the loves of my life. Things sure have changed for my husband and I! With a 13 month old baby, dinner plans sure have changed.
As silly as it sounds, I love cooking! I love cooking for others, sharing my culinary experiences, and trying new recipes. I also love using food as a gift for holidays. On Valentine’s Day, my husband and son left me beautiful flowers and a Snoopy (my fave comic) card that morning. Our energetic little guy almost pulled a vase off of the store shelf because he was so excited! I spent the day thinking of a way to reciprocate my love to them both. Consideration was taken on what they both enjoy eating and what my toddler can physically eat at this stage in life.
By the end of the day I settled on a quick menu for my two guys. I shopped quickly after work and made an easy, but thoughtful dinner that evening. They both seemed to really appreciate it!
Valentine’s Menu
I cooked pan seared strip steaks, and roasted asparagus and tomatoes. This was served with one of Christian’s favorites: twice-baked potatoes from Winchell’s in Lexington, KY. I bought a red-velvet cupcake for dessert from a local bakery- also his favorite. Lastly, we shared the heart-shaped cookie that Freddie made at daycare.
The Steaks
Cooking steaks has truly been a learning experience throughout the years. It takes practice to really master this. I feel like the more I try, the better my steaks turn out.
Here’s a few tips/tricks that have made a difference in the turnout of my pan-seared steaks:
- Use a heavy pan like a cast iron skillet
- Let the steaks come to room temperature before cooking
- Season steaks generously with salt and pepper
- Only flip the steaks just once- set a timer to help
- Baste steaks with butter, garlic and herbs for extra flavor
- Let the steaks rest
It truly was the perfect night in with my family.
Food seems to have a long time connection with romance, love and family. Holidays, especially Valentine’s Day usually involve some sort of special meal. I am interested in doing a little research to learn more about this. Maybe I already have an idea for a future blog post!
Thank you so much for showing me some love by reading my first post on Her Mise En Place! I hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day too.
What did you eat or cook on Valentine’s Day this year?
I was wondering at first what your website name means and realized I was pronouncing it wrong 🙂 Thanks for clarifying that! Good luck on this new journey! I will follow your posts for sure for cooking ideas! 🙂
Thank you!!! I look forward to sharing my culinary adventures!
Congratulations on your blog! Steak is one of my favorites foods.
Thank you so much! I am so excited about blogging and connecting with everyone.
I am a huge foodie and steak is my alllllllllll time favourite thing ever. Nothing better than sinking your teeth into a rare, perfectly seasoned and seared steak. Of all the methods I have tried your recipe ticks all the boxes for best results!
That makes cooking steak seem so much easier! Also, I love the name of you blog!
Your Valentine’s Day dinner sounds so yummy! Thanks for the tips on cooking steak. I love food, and just have started to love cooking.
